Types Of 4” x 36” Sanding Belts We Offer

• Open coat aluminum oxide: Open coat aluminum oxide is the preferred grain and coating type for woodworking. Sanding wood produces a lot of residue and debri. The open coating on our open coat aluminum oxide belts leaves more space between abrasive grains to provide for more air flow. This air flow helps to prevent the belt from clogging and keeps surfaces cool while sanding. 
• Closed coat aluminum oxide: Closed coat aluminum oxide belts leave less open space between abrasive grains in contrast to open coat aluminum oxide. More abrasive grain coverage provides for a more aggressive cut and a smoother finish. Closed coat aluminum oxide is designed for the sanding of harder materials such as hardwoods and metals. When it comes to sanding harder materials, aluminum oxide is the least expensive abrasive grain, but it’s also the least durable when compared to zirconia and ceramic. 
• Zirconia: Zirconia was the strongest abrasive grain money could buy until ceramic entered the market. It now strikes a nice balance between durability and affordability. Zirconia belts last longer than aluminum oxide belts and cost less than ceramic belts. They work best on harder materials like metals and hardwoods.  
• Silicon carbide: Silicon carbide is a specialty abrasive grain that works well for very specific applications. Silicon carbide is commonly used to sand garnet, marble, and glass. 
• Ceramic: Ceramic is one of the strongest and sharpest abrasive grains available on the market. Ceramic provides an aggressive cut rate to save time on sanding. Ceramic belts also last longer than zirconia and aluminum oxide belts. They have a higher price point, but you often save money in the long run with ceramic belts. Ceramic belts are designed for sanding harder materials (metals and hardwoods) like zirconia and closed coat aluminum oxide.
• Flexible ceramic: Our flexible ceramic sanding belts have many of the same properties as our normal ceramic belts. The difference between our normal ceramic belts and our flexible ceramic belts is the flexible backing. Our flexible ceramic belts are produced with a J-flex backing. The lightweight and flexible properties of the backing allows the belt to conform to curved surfaces. If you’re sanding curved surfaces or hard to reach places, the versatility our flexible ceramic belts offer may be just what you need.
