Types Of 6” x 89” Sanding Belts We Offer
Red Label Abrasives offers several different types of 6 x 89 inch sanding belts. Each type of belt and abrasive grain possess different properties. You can read more about each of the different types of 6 x 89 inch belts we offer below.
- Ceramic: Ceramic is truly a premium abrasive grain. It’s one of the strongest abrasive grains available on the market. Ceramic sanding belts last longer and remove material faster than both zirconia and aluminum oxide. Ceramic belts have a higher price point, but you end up saving money long-term due to their longevity. Ceramic sanding belts are preferred for sanding harder materials like metal and hardwoods.
- Zirconia: Zirconia was once the strongest abrasive grain before ceramic sanding belts entered the market. Zirconia strikes a nice balance between performance and affordability. Zirconia sanding belts are less expensive than ceramic sanding belts and they last longer than aluminum oxide sanding belts. Zirconia sanding belts work best on hard materials like hardwoods and metals.
- Open coat aluminum oxide: Aluminum oxide is one of the most popular abrasive grains because of its low price point. Red Label offers two different coatings for aluminum oxide sanding belts. Open coat aluminum oxide is manufactured with more space between the abrasive grains. This additional space provides more airflow to keep sanding surfaces cool and help prevent clogging. Open coat aluminum oxide is primarily used for woodworking. The open coating is designed for softer materials that produce a lot of sanding debri like soft woods (pine, fir, spruce, larch, cedar, etc.).
- Closed coat aluminum oxide: Closed coat aluminum oxide doesn’t leave space between the abrasive grains. More aluminum oxide grains provide a more aggressive cut. Closed coat aluminum oxide is primarily used for harder materials like metals and hardwoods.
- Silicon carbide: Many of the grains above could sand a number of different materials well. Silicon carbide is considered more of a specialty grain that works well on very specific materials. Silicon carbide is known for its ability to remove material without generating excessive heat. It’s preferred for sanding heat sensitive materials such as glass, garnet, and marble. Silicon carbide is also commonly used for blade sharpening.
