Furniture can be made from a mix of different materials, but the majority of furniture is comprised of wood. Not all wood is the same and certain types of wood are denser than others. The best abrasive for the job will vary depending on whether you’re sanding softwood or hardwood. If you’re sanding a material other than wood, our abrasive technicians can help recommend a grain for your application.
Common softwoods include cedar, pine, redwood, and spruce among others. Softwoods sand easier than hardwoods and don’t require a strong abrasive. They also produce more debris when sanded. For this reason, open-coat aluminum oxide is the best grain for sanding softwood.
Aluminum oxide isn’t the strongest abrasive grain, but it’s strong enough to handle wood and it’s one of the most affordable grains available on the market. The open coating also provides more space between grains, which increases airflow to move debris out of the way. Sanding softwood with open-coat aluminum oxide will keep your abrasives from getting clogged.
Common hardwoods include oak, maple, mahogany, poplar, teak, and walnut. Hardwoods are denser than softwoods and require a more aggressive abrasive. Aluminum oxide still works well for hardwoods, but you’ll want closed-coat aluminum oxide instead of open-coat. The additional grain coverage will provide a more aggressive cut to help sand hardwood better.
If you want to save time sanding hardwood, you could also use zirconia abrasives. Zirconia is a stronger grain compared to aluminum oxide and will sand hardwood at a faster rate. Zirconia is slightly more expensive than aluminum oxide, but it’s also longer lasting, so you won’t have to restock as often.
There are many different applications that abrasives are used for in furniture production. Common applications include leveling uneven surfaces, shaping and smoothing surfaces, and prepping surfaces for paint. When it comes to furniture refinishing, abrasives can also be used to remove paints or varnishes.
