Our closed coat aluminum oxide sanding belts are designed specifically for use on metal. This industrial grade material features a load and heat reducing top coat, making it excellent for knife making and other metalworking applications. These belts are well-suited for stock removal, blade profiling, blade sharpening, and more. The heavy-duty X-weight backing can handle spritzing but is not fully waterproof. The belts can be attached to a knife belt sander, benchstand grinder, portable belt sander, or backstand belt grinder.

Open Vs Closed Coat Aluminum Oxide
Aluminum oxide belts are available in two different coatings: open and closed coat. Closed coat aluminum oxide belts have more abrasive material covering the surface area. The higher grit-to-surface ratio allows the belts to cut more aggressively, which makes them ideal for hard materials like metal.
These belts are closed coat aluminum oxide, which is why they’re labeled as metalworking sanding belts. In addition to metal, closed coat aluminum oxide also works well with hardwoods like desert ironwood, African blackwood, and Cocobolo. If you’re planning to use your belt sander for woodworking and you’ll primarily be working with soft woods, you’ll likely want open coat aluminum oxide belts instead.
