Whether you're preparing a vessel for a fresh coat of paint, refinishing woodwork, or tackling fiberglass repairs, our range of high-quality sanding abrasives offers the precision, durability, and versatility necessary to achieve exceptional results in every marine project.
Red Label manufactures a wide range of abrasive products. No matter your process, we carry the abrasives you need to finish your job to perfection.
Marine Sanding Belts:While you can use an orbital sander, a portable belt sander can get the job done faster for larger surfaces like boat hulls or boat decks. Red Label manufactures marine sanding belts in a variety of different sizes to fit just about any belt sander imaginable.
Marine Sanding Discs:Orbital sanders are one of the most commonly utilized tools for marine sanding jobs. Red Label manufactures marine sanding discs with both hook and loop and adhesive backings. We carry discs for both wet and dry sanding applications.
Marine Sanding Sheets:Sanding by hand without tools is great for finishing work and sanding small or tight spaces. Red Label offers premium-quality waterproof sanding sheets that are great for marine applications.
Every abrasive grain contains a unique set of properties, which means some grains are better suited for sanding certain materials than others. There are three main materials that marine parts are comprised of: metal, fiberglass, and wood. The best abrasive for the job is going to depend on which of these three materials you’re sanding.
Fiberglass is not a very forgiving material, which makes mistakes difficult to correct. Silicon carbide guarantees grit uniformity for the life of the belt, which makes it a great choice for sanding fiberglass. Silicon carbide also generates less heat while sanding, which protects fiberglass surfaces.
Softwoods are typically used for boat planking. Softwood tends to produce a significant amount of debris when sanded. As a result, you’ll want to use open-coat aluminum oxide to keep your abrasives from frequently clogging. The open coating leaves more space between grains to increase airflow and move debris.
There are several types of grains you could use for sanding metal. If you’re using a belt sander, we recommend using our EdgeCore ceramic sanding belts. Ceramic is one of the strongest abrasive grains available on the market and it removes material quickly to help you finish projects in less time. We don’t feature ceramic discs on our website, but they are available for custom order with a maximum diameter of 30 inches. We’d also recommend zirconia for sanding discs and closed coat aluminum oxide for sanding sheets.
Our abrasive technicians can help you select the right grain for your application if you’re sanding a boat part produced with a material other than fiberglass, metal, or wood. We can also custom manufacture abrasives if you’re not seeing what you need on our site.
Abrasives are used at many different steps in the boat production or restoration process. Marine sandpaper is commonly used to sand, finish, and polish a boat’s hull. Abrasives can also be used to sand or refinish boat decking or dock planks.
