Red Label offers several different types of abrasive products for wood sanding. No matter the tool you use, we have the abrasives for you:
Red Label manufactures wood sanding products with three different types of abrasive grains: open-coat aluminum oxide, closed-coat aluminum oxide, and zirconia. The best grain for your sanding application will depend on whether you’re sanding softwoods or hardwoods.
Aluminum oxide is the most affordable abrasive grain and softwoods are a weaker material that sands easily. You don’t need anything stronger than aluminum oxide for sanding softwood.
We recommend using open-coat aluminum oxide products for sanding softwood. Softwood tends to produce more dust and debris than hardwood. The open coating allows for more airflow, which prevents your belts, sheets, or discs from clogging.
As a stronger and denser material, hardwoods require a stronger abrasive. We do not recommend using open-coat aluminum oxide for sanding hardwoods, because it would take much longer to sand hardwood with an open-coat abrasive. You can instead use closed-coat aluminum oxide for sanding hardwoods. The increased grain coverage provides a higher cut rate to sand hardwood faster.
In addition to closed-coat aluminum oxide, you can also use zirconia abrasives for hardwood. Zirconia products have a higher price point than aluminum oxide products. However, zirconia is a stronger and more durable grain compared to aluminum oxide. Zirconia products will last longer and sand hardwood faster than aluminum oxide. For this reason, some shops prefer zirconia to save time sanding and re-stocking.
