What Are Adhesive Sanding Discs?
Adhesive sanding discs are manufactured to contain an adhesive sticker backing, so that the discs can be applied to the sander and firmly remain on during use. Pressure sensitive adhesive (PSA) discs are appealing, because they’re both lightweight and affordable.
Adhesive Vs. Hook & Loop
PSA is one of two popular backing styles for sanding discs. The other backing option Red Label Abrasives provides ishook and loop (think velcro). The backing type you purchase is usually determined by the type your sander supports. However, you can buy converter pads, so that your sander supports hook and loop discs or vice versa.
PSA discs are popular, because they are less expensive. The hook and loop backing is more expensive to produce, but the trade off is that hook and loop discs can be swapped and re-used. Once you remove a PSA disc from your sander, the adhesive wears off and you won’t be able to stick the disc back on your sander. PSA discs save you money if you’re typically performing jobs that only require one or two grits. If you’re sanding with multiple grits, it’s often more economical to use hook and loop discs to easily swap grits out.
Adhesive Sanding Discs For Wood
It’s important to make sure you’re using the best possible grain for your application. We tend to recommend aluminum oxide for woodworking, because it’s an affordable grain that works well sanding wood. If you want adhesive discs for wood sanding, you’ll want to shop our discs that include gold or multipurpose in the product name.
Adhesive Sanding Discs For Metal
Red Label does offer metal sanding aluminum oxide, but we often recommend zirconia sanding discs for metal. Zirconia is a stronger abrasive grain, so it cuts metal more aggressively and lasts longer than aluminum oxide. If you’re dry sanding metal, we recommend our zirconia sanding discs. Our blue aluminum oxide sanding discs are still a great choice if you’re wet sanding or sharpening metal.
Removing Adhesive Sanding Discs
Removing and swapping adhesive discs is a pretty straightforward process. You’ll want to make sure you first unplug or remove the battery from your sander before trying to remove the disc. This will prevent your sander from accidentally turning on as you’re taking off the disc.
Once your sander is depowered, you can simply peel the disc off. Occasionally the adhesive might be too strong to easily remove. Applying heat to the disc can help in the removal process. You’ll want to clean off any adhesive residue on the sander before applying a new disc to keep the surface smooth and free of bumps.
