Aluminum oxide is one of several different types of abrasive grains. Aluminum oxide is one of the most popular types of abrasive grains, because it strikes a nice balance between performance and affordability. Aluminum oxide abrasives can be coated as open coat or closed coat. Our 4”x60’ woodworking rolls are open coat. This type of coating is best for woodworking and other soft material applications. Open coat aluminum oxide is not ideal if you’re working with harder materials like metal.
It is possible to buy pre-cut sanding strips for drum sanders, but going this route will always be more expensive. You can save a lot of money by cutting your own drum sanding strips and it doesn’t take much time. You can actually save time by using an old strip as a template for cutting if you have an old strip available at your disposal.
The process for cutting drum sanding strips is relatively easy. We have a blog post on how to cut your own drum sanding strips if you’re interested in learning more about the process.
