Our paper-backed wide belts are produced with an open coating of aluminum oxide grains. Open-coat aluminum oxide wide belts have more space between grains to allow for greater airflow. The increased airflow keeps surfaces cool and helps to prevent the belts from clogging when sanding softer materials. Paper-backed aluminum oxide wide belts are great for sanding softwoods, but they can also be used for hardwoods and wood composites. Paper-backed wide belts are ultimately used for finish sanding surfaces to create a smooth finish.
Red Label produces wide belts with both paper and cloth-backed options. These belts are produced with a paper backing. There are several benefits to choosing wide belts with a paper backing.
Compared to cloth, paper generates very minimal friction and heat because of its lighter weight. Reduced heat can extend the life of the belt and protect the surface of the workpiece. Paper is ideal for sanding flat surfaces and is primarily used for finishing work. Paper-backed wide belts are known for producing a very smooth finish on flat surfaces. Paper is less expensive than cloth to manufacture, so paper-backed belts also cost less than cloth belts.
Of course, there are limitations to paper backings as well. Paper can only be used for dry sanding and it doesn’t work as well for uneven surfaces. If you intend to engage in wet sanding, or you’re sanding surfaces that aren’t flat, you’ll want to browse our cloth-backed wide belts instead.
