Red Label manufactures a wide array of lapidary sanding products. You can read about the three main types of lapidary products we offer below.
Lapidary Sanding Belts: Belt sanders are great tools for removing material from stone quickly. Red Label produces silicon carbide sanding belts in sizes ranging from 1” x 30” all the way up to 6” x 90”.
Lapidary Sanding Discs:Red Label manufactures lapidary sanding discs in various sizes ranging from 5” up to 14”. Many makers will use disc sanders as an alternative to belt sanders. All of our lapidary discs come with an adhesive backing as opposed to a hook and loop backing. If you have a sander that utilizes a hook and loop pad, you can buy a convert kit to support PSA discs.
Lapidary Sanding Sheets:Sanding sheets are great for shaping and smoothing smaller features and difficult-to-reach spaces. Many jewelers and stone masons will also switch to hand sanding for finishing work. Red Label offers silicon carbide sanding sheets that can be used for both wet and dry sanding.
If you don’t see the abrasive you need, we can also custom-manufacture abrasives for you. You can submit our custom order form to receive a free quote for a custom order.
Stone and gems are very heat-sensitive materials. Too much heat can cause structural damage to the crystals of stone. Due to the heat-sensitive nature of stone and gems, the best abrasive grain for lapidary sanding is silicon carbide. Silicon carbide is known for its heat-mitigating properties. It has the ability to remove material without excessive heat buildup. Silicon carbide is also known for delivering extremely consistent results, which will leave your workpiece surfaces smooth and blemish-free.
Sandpaper is primarily used by masons and jewelers for shaping and polishing stones and gems. Stone tends to break apart pretty easily, so you don’t need to start on a very coarse grit for shaping. Somewhere between 120 and 200 grit is usually a good place to start. You can then progress your way up for an increasingly finer finish. Makers will tend to end anywhere between 1200 to 5000 grit for stonework.
While you can dry sand stone, it’s always better to wet sand. Inhaling sanding dust from stones and gems over time can lead to silicosis. Wet sanding keeps dust particles out of the air and it also acts as a lubricant to reduce friction and help your abrasives last longer. All of our silicon carbide abrasives come with a cloth backing and can be utilized for wet sanding.
